Why BRIO World?

From the designers

Daniel Mauritzson, BRIO Designer

“BRIO World is our world-famous open-ended play concept. It’s designed to inspire children’s creativity and help with their development through playful interactions in recognisable environments. To make our products even more fun for kids, we use a combination of materials that allows us to add intricate features and playful functions.”

Frequently asked questions about BRIO World trains and train sets.

What age children are BRIO World toys for?

BRIO World toys are designed for children aged 3 years and up. They are crafted to support open-ended, imaginative play and promote the development of fine motor skills, creativity and storytelling.

Are BRIO World trains and sets compatible with other brands?

Yes, all BRIO railway toys, including BRIO World sets and trains, are compatible with many other wooden railway brands. This compatibility is thanks to the standardised track gauge and connectors that BRIO originally pioneered in 1958.

This means children can mix and match pieces from different brands, expanding their railway worlds and encouraging even more creative play.

Where are BRIO World toys made?

All BRIO toys are designed in Malmö, Sweden, where our head offices are based, and produced in China and the Czech Republic.

When we moved our production in 2000 to China, we took our time to ensure the production methods could live up to the same standards as in Sweden. And some of the machines we use today originate from our first factories in Sweden.

What type of wood are BRIO World train tracks made from?

Our wooden toys are mostly made of beech, which is an ideal material since it’s highly durable and difficult to break. Beech is also very common in Europe, it’s not endangered and replanting it has been mandatory since the early 1900s, which is important to us. All our wooden toys are FSC® Certified (lic. no. C133361).

Do BRIO have battery trains in their range?

Yes, we have lots of different battery-powered trains with a range of functions from classic movement to steam effects. Our first battery train was created in 1991.

When were BRIO trains first created?

BRIO created the first miniture railway set in 1958. This marked the beginning of the iconic BRIO railway system, which has since become a beloved classic in children's toys.

Are BRIO World trains safe for babies?

We've designed BRIO World to be sibling safe with no small parts. This means that children younger than 3 years can safely be a part of the same play environment.

Are BRIO World toys compatible with BRIO Classic and BRIO My First Railway?

Yes, BRIO World toys are fully compatible with both the BRIO Classic and BRIO My First Railway lines. This cross-compatibility encourages long-term play and creativity as children build and customize their railway systems as they grow older.

Are BRIO World train tracks reversible?

Yes, BRIO World train tracks are reversible where it creates value, meaning that both sides of the track can be used interchangeably. You'll typically notice this clever design feature with our curved tracks. Reversibility allows for greater flexibility when building layouts, as it enables more creative possibilities and reduces frustration when connecting pieces.

Is train play good for children?

Train play is fantastic for children as it promotes imaginative play, helps develop fine motor skills and encourages problem-solving. It also supports social interaction, teaching collaboration and communication, while improving patience and focus.

Are BRIO World toys safe to play with?

Nothing is more important to us than safety. We know that children sometimes play with toys in other ways than expected, and that’s why we test our products thoroughly.

The toys we sell must comply with all safety standards, and sometimes we test them against impending standards too. We set very strict safety requirements, and in many cases our own testing is tougher than the legal requirements. As a product category, toys have the toughest safety standards and regulations to live up to, and that’s something we’re happy about.

Which train set should I start with for my child?

The best train set to start with all depends on your child's age and interests.

For toddlers (18+ months), we recommend the My First Railway Beginner Pack for a colourful and age-appropriate introduction into railway play.

For preschoolers (3+ years), our Starter Sets are a great introduction into classic railway play. Or if you child has special interests, we have lots of themed sets like police, fire rescue, countryside and animals, or our ever-popular cargo-themed sets.

Starting with a smaller, expandable set ensures your child can grow their collection based on their play preferences. BRIO's compatibility across sets makes it easy to build on the fun as their interest evolves.
